Correct spelling is important to effective communication. When a writer knows the correct order of letters to spell words, the message of a piece of writing is easier to understand.
During the editing stage of the writing process, students further improve their draft and often prepare it for publishing by correcting errors, adding clarity, and using more precise and effective word choice. With adult assistance, students in kindergarten may begin applying some of these skills such as adding, deleting, or rearranging words or sentences and removing unnecessary information.
Understanding a variety of common letter patterns and rules for how words change depending on their usage is critical in knowing how to spell. Students should be able to spell words correctly according to these common spelling patterns and spelling rules. Students are expected to know that the sound /j/ can be represented by the letter j when combined with any vowel, like in jabón, traje, jícama, joroba, or junio. The same sound can also be represented by the letter g, but only when it is combined with the vowels e and i, like in gelatina, congelar, girasol, o agitar.
