Knowledge and Skills Statement

Composition: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts--writing process. The student uses the writing process recursively to compose multiple texts that are legible and uses appropriate conventions.

Students in kindergarten are expected to correctly use the verbs ser and estar in their sentences. In Spanish, the verbs ser and estar (to be) have some important differences. Typically, the verb ser refers to specific attributes of something or someone, like physical description (alta) or gender (hombre or mujer). The attributes referred by the verb ser tend to be more permanent. For example, Mi prima Teresa es muy alta. On the other hand, the verb estar is typically used for states of being that tend to be more temporary. For example, Hoy me siento un poco aburrido. In the first example, the attribute alta is unlikely to change, whereas in the second example the state of being aburrido is likely to change.
During the editing stage of the writing process, students further improve their draft and often prepare it for publishing by correcting errors, adding clarity, and using more precise and effective word choice. With adult assistance, students in kindergarten may begin applying some of these skills such as adding, deleting, or rearranging words or sentences and removing unnecessary information.
Students in kindergarten are expected to know that a verb typically expresses an action, occurrence, or mode of being. The following examples show in bold the verbs in each sentence, El mono trepa por el árbol, La lluvia cae sin parar, Los niños juegan en el parque, La enfermera cuida de mi hermana.
