Knowledge and Skills Statement

Developing and sustaining foundational language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking--beginning reading and writing. The student develops word structure knowledge through phonological awareness, print concepts, phonics, and morphology to communicate, decode, and spell.

Have the students make a three-column chart and write ten words of each type of pronunciation pattern. Students may use dictionaries, books or articles to find words. They may also use words they already know.

This SE requires students to know the diverse accentuation patterns of words depending on the syllable that carries the pronunciation stress. Students need a clear understanding of syllabication as well as each type of pronunciation pattern.

Both decoding and encoding skills are needed to build a foundation in reading. Decoding is the process of translating written speech into verbal speech sounds by applying knowledge of letter-sound correspondences. Encoding is the process of using letter-sound knowledge to write or spell words. Students must understand the various spelling patterns and rules of the Spanish language to correctly construct words in their written products. It is important that students apply these rules consistently instead of using invented spelling because they may unknowingly write a word that is real but that they did not intend, causing confusion for their reader.
Palabras agudas are words with the stress on the last syllable. They may have a prosodic or orthographic accent depending on specific orthographic rules. For example, abaratar, gratitud, acordeón, portugués, autobús, información.
Palabras esdrújulas are words with the stress on the antepenultimate syllable. They are spelled with an orthographic (written) accent. For example, centímetro, obstáculo, académico, penúltimo.
Palabras graves are words with the stress on the penultimate syllable. They may have a prosodic or orthographic accent depending on specific orthographic rules. For example, armadillo, persona, alegría, césped.
Palabras sobresdrújulas are words with the stress on the syllable before the antepenultimate. They are spelled with an orthographic (written) accent. For example, guárdamelo, últimamente, corrígesela, devuélvamelo.
