TEKS Talk - SLA Inquiry Research image

Knowledge and Skills Statement

Inquiry and research: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts. The student engages in both short-term and sustained recursive inquiry processes for a variety of purposes.

During a one-on-one conference, have students explain their plans for researching a specific topic. Task students with determining what information they will seek independently and what they will need from the teacher to complete the assignment. Create and share a rubric for this assessment that aligns with a schedule of tasks to complete over the course of the research project.

Further Explanation

This assessment requires students to understand and demonstrate the various steps involved in the inquiry and research process as they develop a research plan. Help students to identify aspects in need of adjustment or additional focus.

Students are expected to create and follow a plan that includes each of the steps in the research process. Students should understand that a research plan is a timeline created around the research process. Fundamental to developing a research plan is a clear understanding of the assignment. Students at this grade level should know how to adjust a plan when the process is not working. For example, students should ask themselves questions such as “How much progress have I made?” and “Could we be doing things more efficiently?” “Students should also know how to continually evaluate the research question and revise it based on source analysis.
