Ensuring that the standard rules of the Spanish language have been applied correctly helps the audience to more easily comprehend the information because they are not having to interrupt their thinking to determine what the writer intended to say.

Students are expected to demonstrate an understanding of the functions of prepositions and prepositional phrases and to use them effectively in their writing. Students are expected to identify the subject of a clause and to use the appropriate subject-verb agreement when a prepositional phrase appears between the subject and its verb. In the following sentence, El equipo de investigadores llegó a la misma conclusión, the subject El equipo de investigadores is composed of a singular noun, El equipo and a prepositional phrase with a plural noun, de investigadores. The singular form of the verb llegó, in the example above, corresponds with the singular noun equipo. However, it could be the case that the verb refers to the plural noun in the prepositional phrase: investigadores. In that instance, the verb should be in plural form, El equipo de investigadores llegaron a la misma conclusión. Both constructions are correct, however students should consistently use the verb in singular or plural form in subsequent sentences. For example, El equipo de investigadores llegó a la misma conclusión. Además, recomendó (and not recomendaron) que se hicieran más estudios.
