SCIENCE.5.10.B — Vertical Alignment
Vertical alignment shows student expectations in the same subject area at different grade levels that are related to or build upon one another.
describe and classify rocks by the observable properties of size, shape, color, and texture;
distinguish between natural and manmade resources; and
determine the physical properties of rocks that allow Earth's natural resources to be stored there.
Recurring themes and concepts — Connections to the content
Cause-and-effect relationships are relationships between two or more variables or phenomena whereby one variable or event leads to a predictable response. Events have causes—sometimes simple, sometimes multi-faceted.
Sedimentary rocks (effect) are formed through compaction and cementation (causes). The decomposition of organisms within the rock layers (cause) leads to fossil fuels (effect).
Matter and energy are conserved, changing forms but maintaining quantities. Energy flows within a system or between systems through transfers and transformations. Matter is cycled within systems through physical and chemical processes.
Sedimentary rock is formed from soil and rock which is compacted and cemented. Matter (soil and rock) is cycled and forms a new material which has different properties.
