Matter and its properties. The student knows that objects have physical properties that determine how they are described and classified.

Have students draw a picture and write a sentence to explain what might happen to a popsicle on a hot day. Have students draw a picture and write a sentence to explain what might happen to a cup of water in during a winter freeze. Ask students to write a sentence to explain what caused these changes. Have students share their explanations with a peer. Students should be able to explain that some materials get softer or melt when they are warmed up. They should also be able to explain that some materials get stiffer or more solid when they are cooled down.
