Knowledge and Skills Statement

Inquiry and research: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts. The student engages in both short-term and sustained recursive inquiry processes for a variety of purposes.

One option for assessing the SE would be through observation and anecdotal notes taken during the research process. A one-on-one conference can be used to ask students about what they used to gather information.

Sample Rubric:
1) The student is unable to gather information from a variety of sources.
2) The student gathers information from one source, with adult assistance.
3) The student gathers information from multiple sources with adult assistance, but all sources are similar in type. (For example, the student gathers information from two to three sources, but they are all books.).
4) The student gathers information from multiple sources and varying types of sources with adult assistance. (For example, the student gathers information from books, online searches, magazines, and interviews.).

Note:
This skill requires extensive modeling by the teacher and should be introduced and practiced as a whole-class activity. Therefore, demonstrated proficiency of this skill is expected toward the end of kindergarten.

Students must know that research requires the process of gathering information. Students must have a clear understanding of what they are researching and be able to look through a variety of sources to pull information on that topic. Teachers can model this process for students and guide them through the process of collecting and organizing new information.
