multiple genres TEKS talk image

Knowledge and Skills Statement

Multiple genres: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts--genres. The student recognizes and analyzes genre-specific characteristics, structures, and purposes within and across increasingly complex traditional, contemporary, classical, and diverse texts.

Use a checklist or anecdotal notes during small-group discussion, one-on-one conferences, or learning-center time to keep track of whether students recognize characteristics of multimodal and digital text.

An observational rubric can be used.

Sample rubric:
1) The student does not recognize characteristics of multimodal and digital texts even with adult assistance.
2) The student inconsistently recognizes characteristics of multimodal and digital texts with adult assistance.
3) The student consistently recognizes characteristics of multimodal and digital texts with adult assistance.
4) The student consistently recognizes characteristics of multimodal and digital texts independently.

A digital text is a resource that is in a digital or web-based form (e.g., eBooks, an online dictionary).
A multimodal text involves the strategic integration of two or more modes of communication including written and spoken texts, images, gestures, music, digital texts and media, and live performances.
