Observe students during a writing activity or learning-center time. A rubric can be used to determine students’ level of ability using a resource to find words.
Sample Rubric:
1) The student does not use resources to find words even when prompted by an adult.
2) The student occasionally uses resources to find words but requires adult assistance.
3) The student uses resources to find words, but sometimes requires adult assistance.
4) The student consistently and independently uses resources to find words.
