Knowledge and Skills Statement

Developing and sustaining foundational language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking--vocabulary. The student uses newly acquired vocabulary expressively.

Observe students during a writing activity or learning-center time. A rubric can be used to determine students’ level of ability using a resource to find words.

Sample Rubric:

1) The student does not use resources to find words even when prompted by an adult.
2) The student occasionally uses resources to find words but requires adult assistance.
3) The student uses resources to find words, but sometimes requires adult assistance.
4) The student consistently and independently uses resources to find words.

Students should be able to use both print and digital resources such as picture dictionaries and eBooks. Students will learn the unique characteristics and capabilities of different types of resources and be able to apply that skill to finding words.
