Knowledge and Skills Statement

Inquiry and research: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts. The student engages in both short-term and sustained recursive inquiry processes for a variety of purposes.

One option for assessing this SE would be through observation and anecdotal notes taken during whole or small group discussions that involve inquiry and research. The teacher can ask questions to help the student generate questions for inquiry.

Sample Rubric
1) The student is unable to generate questions for informal or formal inquiry.
2) The student generates questions for inquiry, but has difficulty staying on topic or asking purposeful questions.
3) The student generates questions for informal and formal inquiry with adult assistance.
4) The student generates questions for informal and formal inquiry with little to no adult assistance.

Inquiry is the act of seeking information by questioning. It is also known as the process of investigating a topic of interest in order to find out more about it. In kindergarten, inquiry can be informal (e.g., students have a discussion about a topic of interest and share their thoughts using background knowledge) or it can be formal (e.g., students work with a graphic organizer to collaboratively generate a question about a topic they plan to further investigate).
