Knowledge and Skills Statement

Developing and sustaining foundational language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking--vocabulary. The student uses newly acquired vocabulary expressively.
Students must be able to determine how newly acquired vocabulary can help them communicate an idea with precision. Students will understand that words are not automatically better or worse based on how complex or common they are, but instead that words should be chosen because they express a specific idea or emotion necessary for the recipient of the message to comprehend meaning. Students need various skills to acquire vocabulary in order to ensure they have options for word choice when determining how best to convey an idea.
