Knowledge and Skills Statement

Composition: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts--writing process. The student uses the writing process recursively to compose multiple texts that are legible and uses appropriate conventions.

The following is one example of how to assess proficiency of this student expectation (SE) or a portion of the SE. More examples coming soon.
 

Have students follow a series of steps in the publishing process as they work toward publishing their writing to share with an audience. Steps may include copying the text neatly on clean sheets of paper, preparing an electronic presentation of the text, or creating illustrations that support the text. If the text is written in the form of a book, students might also add a table of contents, a dedication page, and a front and back cover. Once complete, the published piece can be shared in the classroom library or other common area for other students to enjoy.

This assessment example requires students to apply each stage of the writing process correctly as they create a refined, completed draft of text to share publicly with an audience. Students make decisions about how to achieve their intended goals and create text that is appealing to the intended audiences.

Students are expected to prepare refined, completed drafts for specific intended audiences. Students should consider the intended audience during all stages of the writing process—brainstorming to final revising and editing—so the purpose for writing is achieved.
