Knowledge and Skills Statement

Multiple genres: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts--genres. The student recognizes and analyzes genre-specific characteristics, structures, and purposes within and across increasingly complex traditional, contemporary, classical, and diverse texts.

Students should learn to identify various text features that are common to informational text (e.g., graphs, stylized print, or tables), and develop knowledge of how these features help the reader understand the most important ideas. For example, an informational science text about an existing ecosystem might include a table listing the plants typically found in the ecosystem and their attributes to provide a visual explanation of the information that the author has presented.

Students are expected to have a clear idea of the specific attributes of informational text. For example, students should be able to identify the unique characteristics of informational text, such as a central idea, and graphic features, such as tables and timelines. Students should recognize the way an informational text is structured or organized. For example, an author may choose to organize an article using a cause-and-effect approach to describe a particular topic.
