Knowledge and Skills Statement

Composition: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts--writing process. The student uses the writing process recursively to compose multiple texts that are legible and uses appropriate conventions.

Use the following rubric to monitor students’ progress in generating ideas and planning first drafts. 

Sample rubric:

  1. The student is unable to plan a first draft by generating on-task ideas even with adult assistance.
  2. The student is able to plan a first draft by generating on-task ideas by drawing OR brainstorming with adult assistance.
  3. The student is able to plan a first draft by generating on-task ideas by drawing OR brainstorming independently.
  4. The student is able to plan a first draft by generating on-task ideas by drawing AND brainstorming independently. 
Brainstorming is a technique in which many ideas are generated quickly and without judgment or evaluation, usually as part of a problem-solving process or to inspire creative thinking. It may be conducted in a small group, a large group, or individually.
