Knowledge and Skills Statement

Developing and sustaining foundational language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking--vocabulary. The student uses newly acquired vocabulary expressively.

Use a checklist to monitor student ability. Sample checklist items may include the following:

  • The student is able to explain the meaning of words in a text, using illustrations as clues for meaning.
  • The student is able to use new vocabulary in an appropriate context after it is introduced.
  • The student is able to visibly look at a text and illustrations for clues to help her explain the meaning of new words.
As students see words they do not know, they should use illustrations and the context of the sentence to help them decipher what the word means. In first grade, this is the introduction to context clues and will require significant scaffolding and teacher modeling.
