Use a rubric to monitor students’ progress. This SE should be assessed both while a student is generating ideas and when a student has completed her work.

Sample rubric:

    1. The student is unable to plan a first draft by generating on-task ideas even with adult assistance.
    2. The student is able to plan a first draft by generating on-task ideas by drawing OR brainstorming with adult assistance.
    3. The student is able to plan a first draft by generating on-task ideas by drawing AND brainstorming with adult assistance.
    4. The student is able to plan a first draft by generating on-task ideas by drawing AND brainstorming independently
Brainstorming is a technique in which many ideas are generated quickly and without judgment or evaluation, usually as part of a problem-solving process or to inspire creative thinking. It may be conducted in a small group, large group, or individually.
the product a writer creates during the writing process when the writer organizes thoughts and attempts to create a cohesive text that supports the purpose and message
