Introduction
The Grade 5 Reading to Learn Academy will focus on effective and systematic instruction to implement the current English/Spanish language arts and reading TEKS* and the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS). Teachers will collaborate with colleagues in hands-on activities as they
- work to integrate research-based strategies across the literacy components (Word Study and Recognition, Fluency, Vocabulary, Comprehension, and Writing) into their daily reading and writing instruction to help students learn to read;
- use explicit instruction as they practice these strategies;
- incorporate these strategies into the reading program they use with their students;
- support all learners as they differentiate instruction to meet the needs of English language learners and students who are struggling with dyslexia and other reading difficulties;
- consider the importance of student motivation and engagement when planning and implementing literacy instruction; and
- use assessment information to make instructional decisions.
Academy participants are asked to bring a narrative or an expository children’s book.
*The revised TEKS for English and Spanish language arts and reading will not be implemented until the 2019–2020 school year. The Reading to Learn Academies will focus on the current TEKS.
