Introduction
The Grade 3 Literacy Achievement Academy will focus on effective and systematic instruction to implement the current English/Spanish language arts and reading TEKS* and the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS). Teachers will collaborate with colleagues in hands-on activities as they
- work to integrate research-based strategies across the literacy components (Word Study and Recognition, Fluency, Vocabulary, Comprehension, and Writing) into their daily reading and writing instruction to help students learn to read;
- use explicit instruction as they practice these strategies;
- incorporate these strategies into the reading program they use with their students;
- support all learners as they differentiate instruction to meet the needs of English language learners and students who are struggling with dyslexia and other reading difficulties; and
- use assessment information to make instructional decisions.
Academy participants are asked to bring a narrative or an expository children’s book.
*The revised TEKS for English and Spanish language arts and reading will not be implemented until the 2019–2020 school year. The Literacy Achievement Academies will focus on the current TEKS.
