Knowledge and Skills Statement

Developing and sustaining foundational language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking--beginning reading and writing. The student develops word structure knowledge through phonological awareness, print concepts, phonics, and morphology to communicate, decode, and spell.
In the Spanish language, the information that a word conveys can be changed by adding other word parts to it. A word can change in meaning or function by adding these word parts. For example, the word honesto changes in meaning when the prefix des- is added to create deshonesto. Honesto changes its function from a descriptive word to a personal quality by changing the o to an i and adding the suffix -dad to make honestidad. Students must understand these concepts in order to expand their own vocabulary and communicate effectively.
