Knowledge and Skills Statement

Composition: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts--writing process. The student uses the writing process recursively to compose multiple texts that are legible and uses appropriate conventions.

Task students with a paired dictation writing activity in which they take turns dictating to a partner as they complete a piece of writing. Then, have students work together to edit their writing to ensure appropriate use of conjunctive adverbs. Have students identify whether conjunctive adverbs are used appropriately or inappropriately. Ask students to demonstrate how transitions are improved when conjunctive adverbs are used.

The student is expected to convey the relationship between two independent ideas using a conjunctive adverb. This knowledge is acquired through practice and experience using correct conjunctive adverbs in writing. This skill should be developed with writing in all genres.

Students are expected to correctly use conjunctive adverbs to show the relationship between clauses. Students will review their drafts and identify opportunities to add conjunctive adverbs to clarify the connections between related ideas and delete or replace existing conjunctive adverbs that inappropriately connect ideas within the draft. Mientras or como are examples of conjunctive adverbs. Consider the following examples, Si quieres puedes ir a comer mientras espero mi turno or A mi primo le encanta esa música, como a ti.
During the editing stage of the writing process, students further improve their draft and often prepare it for publishing by correcting convention errors. Ensuring that the standard rules of the Spanish language have been applied correctly helps the audience to more easily comprehend the information because they are not having to interrupt their thinking to determine what the writer intended to say.
