A knowledge and skills statement is a broad statement of what students must know and be able to do. It generally begins with a learning strand and ends with the phrase “The student is expected to:” Knowledge and skills statements always include related student expectations.

Students should have opportunities to engage with texts that move them from literal comprehension requiring very little inference to more complex texts requiring students to use multiple comprehension skills to construct meaning. Once students comprehend a text, they can interact with the ideas the text presents, recognizing the larger themes, messages, and how they can apply the knowledge gained from the text to their lives and the world around them.
