Knowledge and Skills Statement

Developing and sustaining foundational language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking--vocabulary. The student uses newly acquired vocabulary expressively.
Students are expected to understand how newly learned words can help them communicate an idea with precision. Students should understand that words are not automatically more or less effective based only on how complex or common they are but, instead, should be chosen because they express a specific idea or emotion necessary for the recipient of the message to comprehend meaning. Students need to rely on various vocabulary acquisition skills (e.g., using reference resources or using context clues) to ensure they have a robust enough vocabulary to allow them to precisely communicate an idea.
