Knowledge and Skills Statement
As an educator, knowing that students often have a misconception about negative acceleration is helpful. They often think that negative acceleration requires a negative velocity rather than a decreasing velocity. The key to this misconception is a misunderstanding of what it means for velocity or acceleration to be positive or negative. For velocity, the sign indicates the direction in which the object is moving. For acceleration, the sign indicates an increase or decrease in speed.
