Have students compose a brief procedural text such as a how-to text, ensuring they are using a clear central idea as well as other genre characteristics such as clear organizational patterns. Ask students to exchange texts with a partner and identify the characteristics of informational text in their partner’s writing.

Students are expected to compose informational papers to effectively explain and clarify a topic. Their writing must have a clear central idea with supporting details, an introduction and a conclusion, and an evident organizational pattern.
