Knowledge and Skills Statement
Developing and sustaining foundational language skills: listening, speaking, discussion, and thinking -- oral language. The student develops oral language through listening, speaking, and discussion.

Use an observational checklist to help determine if students are able to identify the difference between asking and telling. The checklist might include topics like the following:
- The student knows how to follow directions when told.
- The student knows to answer a question when asked (paying attention to verbal and nonverbal cues).
- The student knows how to tell others things (e.g., communicate what the student needs or tell a friend the steps for completing a task).
- The student knows how to ask a question that is relevant and has a purpose.
