Knowledge and Skills Statement

Inquiry and research: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts. The student engages in both short-term and sustained recursive inquiry processes for a variety of purposes.

Observe students during discussions and use a rubric to score responses. How well students generate questions about a topic and use those questions to guide their research is a skill that is best assessed when witnessed in an authentic way.

Sample rubric:

  1. The student is unable to ask or answer questions for informal or formal inquiry.
  2. The student is able to answer questions but has difficulty staying on topic or asking purposeful questions
  3. The student is able to answer questions and ask questions about a topic, but the questions do not align directly with the inquiry process.
  4. The student is able to answer questions and generate questions for informal and formal inquiry.
Inquiry is the act of seeking information by questioning. It is also known as the process of investigating a topic of interest in order to found out more about it. In second grade, inquiry can be informal (e.g., students have a discussion about a topic of interest and share their thoughts using background knowledge) or it can be formal (e.g., students work with a graphic organizer to collaboratively generate a question about a topic that they plan to further investigate).
