Knowledge and Skills Statement

Composition: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts--writing process. The student uses the writing process recursively to compose multiple texts that are legible and uses appropriate conventions.

Students are expected to use adjectives effectively in their writing to demonstrate an understanding of how adjectives create specificity by describing the quality or quantity of something. Adjectives are words that describe or modify a noun or pronoun (e.g., enorme in El elefante africano es enorme and veloz in La libre es demasiado veloz para atraparla). In Spanish, adjectives generally go after nouns (Me tomé un vaso de agua fría). Additionally, in Spanish there should always be an agreement among articles, nouns, and adjectives in singular or plural forms. In the following sentence, Los tigres blancos son especies muy raras, the first components of the sentence: article (Los), noun (tigres), and adjective (blancos) are in plural form. It would be incorrect to write Los tigres blanco son especies muy raras or El tigres blancos son especies muy raras.
Editing is a stage in the writing process when a written text is prepared for an audience by attending to and correcting mechanics, grammar, and spelling. Applying the standards of the English language correctly helps the audience more easily comprehend the information because it is not having to interrupt thinking to determine what the writer intended to say.
