The Practicum in Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security course is recommended as a capstone experience. Students may be placed in either a paid or unpaid work experiences. Be sure to review the related TEKS before you create the outline of training.

Age restrictions, the inherent danger of related occupations, and other employment requirements limit the number of approvable training stations for students interested in pursuing careers in this cluster. However, it may be possible to place students in less restricted work experiences such as a dispatcher or office worker so they can gain an understanding of the industry as a whole.

The Practicum in Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security course is recommended for students in grades 11-12 who are participating in a coherent sequence of courses. It is designed to give students supervised practical application of previously studied knowledge and skills.

The Principles of Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security course is a recommended prerequisite for students interested in the practicum course.

Occupations in the LPSCS Career Cluster focus on protecting public safety. Teachers should collaborate with the training sponsor to develop both general and occupation-specific safety training objectives for the training plan. It is a good idea to assign students to research and report on legal and safety considerations to demonstrate their understanding of an occupation and its industry.

Pre-Employment Requirements

Possible legal or safety prerequisites for working at a training site in this cluster may include:

• age verification (which varies according to occupation);
• criminal background check;
• CPR/first aid certification;
• drug tests; and
• OSHA Public Sector Safety and Health Fundamentals training.
