Click Grade 2: Increasing and Decreasing Energy to download the Grade 2—Energy lesson. Take a moment to review the content and language objectives below.

As you work through the lesson, look for evidence of tools and math connections. 

The lesson objectives are the TEKS restated in student-friendly text and can be written on your board. 

You will see the notation RM, which is an abbreviation for Reproducible Master, throughout the lesson documents. These pages are located at the end of each lesson and can either be instructional activity sheets or recording pages for students.

This lesson uses the 5E model. The first E is Engage.

Review the Engage portion of the grade 2 lesson and use the animation to create equations.

How would you complete these sentences?

• If I can hear something, it has __________ energy.
• Something that gives off light has __________ energy.
• Something that gets warmer or cooler has __________ energy.

The second E is Explore. 

Begin this section of the lesson by gathering the necessary materials for each activity.

Activity 1: Sound Energy

Follow the Teacher Instruction to complete Activity 1. If you do not have access to the materials, view the video to observe Activity 1. 

Students should come to understand that sound is made when something moves or vibrates. Refrain from telling them about sound and sound waves as they are exploring.

Activity 2: Light Energy

Follow the Teacher Instruction to experience Activity 2.

• Which light source is brighter?
• How did the amount of light in the room affect how you used each light source?

If you do not have access to the materials, view the video to observe Activity 2.

Activity 3: Heat Energy

Review the Teacher Instruction and begin Activity 3. Record your observations on RM 2.

• How did the heat affect each material?

Take a moment to read the following excerpt from the lesson.

Teacher Note

Students will be required to read a thermometer and record temperature during this activity. If your students are unfamiliar with using a thermometer, take time to teach proper use and how to read a thermometer prior to this activity. Reviewing how to read a thermometer and checking for understanding can help you identify students who may struggle with the activity.

Although scientists use the metric measure of temperature, ºC, students will be asked to record the temperature in ºC and ºF to help them see how the two are related. Students should understand that both measure temperature. 0 ºC feels the same as 32 ºF.  38 ºC feels the same as 100 ºF.

The third E is Explain.

Each of the lessons contains a book or short story as part of the Explain section. This does not imply that every lesson has to be formatted with a story. We simply took the opportunity to provide another resource.

Take a moment to read the story.

Review the Facilitation Questions in the Explain section of the lesson.

The fourth E is Elaborate.

Use the following animation to complete the "What Happened Here" sequences. Review the Facilitation Questions in the lesson as you work through the animation. These sequences can also be found on RM 3. 

Now that you have completed the "What Happened Here" activity, what other examples of increasing or decreasing amounts of heat, light, or sound energy can you think of? What are their effects on your everyday life?

Students will be asked to share their examples of increasing or decreasing heat, light, or sound energy with the class in a presentation. They may choose to create a poster or a video.

Locate RM 4: Give Us the Story. Observe each picture and identify the evidence of increased or decreased heat, light, and/or sound energy. Use your observations and supporting evidence to write a story or news report detailing what happened in one of the pictures.
