Knowledge and Skills Statement

Comprehension skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts. The student uses metacognitive skills to both develop and deepen comprehension of increasingly complex texts.

Observe a los estudiantes durante sesiones de lectura en voz alta, ya sea con todos los estudiantes o en grupos pequeños. Haga pausas periódicas y pídales que cierren los ojos un momento y que piensen en la historia que están leyendo y en lo que ven en sus mentes. Haga preguntas y evalúe la comprensión que van teniendo los estudiantes del texto a partir de la explicación de las imágenes que van construyendo.

When students create mental images, they are picturing in their mind what they are reading in a text. Being able to produce accurate mental images is a strong indicator that students comprehend what they are reading. Students create mental images by using the details related to the senses (i.e., what something sounds, feels, tastes, looks, and/or smells like) to visualize what is being described.
