Knowledge and Skills Statement

Developing and sustaining foundational language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking--beginning reading and writing. The student develops word structure knowledge through phonological awareness, print concepts, phonics, and morphology to communicate, decode, and spell.

Observe handwriting during classwork, review handwriting in a notebook, or collect a portfolio of student writing samples and apply a rubric.

Sample Rubric:

  1. The student is still developing letter formation and spacing between letters and words.
  2. The student has legible letter formation but is developing the ability to write on a line with correct directionality and distance from the edge of the paper.
  3. The student has neat letter formation and has mastered the ability to write on a line, but spaces are not consistent between words.
  4. The student has neat letter formation and can write on a line with proper spacing between words.
