Knowledge and Skills Statement

Inquiry and research: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts. The student engages in both short-term and sustained recursive inquiry processes for a variety of purposes.

Use a rubric to observe a student for an extended period of time. Observations can occur during circle time, small-group discussions, or a think-pair-share opportunity.

Sample rubric:

  1. The student is unable to understand information gathered with adult assistance.
  2. The student is able to state one fact learned from gathering information with adult assistance.
  3. The student is able to state two to three facts learned from gathering information with adult assistance.
  4. The student is able to demonstrate deep understanding of information gathered with adult assistance by being able to state at least four to five facts learned from gathering information with adult assistance.
Students should demonstrate understanding by making connections between previous knowledge and new information or by drawing reasonable conclusions from the source. Students may often clarify or extend their research question(s) based on the information they learn in order to better refine the focus of their inquiry.
